Gone are the days of simple chalkboard and chalk in the modern classroom. Digital technology has changed the face and the manner in which students are taught. One of the most intriguing ways the digital world has entered the educational arena is through the use of electronic response systems. This is just one of many new interactive solutions for the modern classroom
Also known as clicker or student response systems, students are provided a digital handheld device that they use to provide answers during classroom instruction. Instructors and teachers know that each student can now answer each question. This instantaneous response also provides information to the teacher as to which students may need extra help. In turn, students also feel more accountability on their part for knowing and understanding the material.
An example of how these systems are used includes traditional textbooks. Students are asked to read a particular section of a book. This is followed by a teacher asking questions and the students respond using their interactive devices. While most of these systems work best with true-false, or yes-no type questions, some systems will allow for a short answer.
These devices can also encourage student interaction and discussion. Teachers can generate opinion questions, which generally require a student to engage in a deeper thought process.
Students are also able to see the answers given by their classmates as the answers can be sent to a projector via the system. This again, provides an opportunity for students to interact and discuss the topic being taught.

Many high schools all over the United States require that the students complete a minimum set of hours for community service. It is believed the community service allows students to develop a good work ethic and experience the diverse range of lifestyles. However, with all experiences community service requirements have many benefits and drawbacks. Here’s a look at the benefits and distant images of requiring community service from high school students.
The benefits of community service for high school students are many. High school students who volunteer are able to but the volunteer experience on their college application. It also exposes them to a diverse background in lifestyles of the surrounding community. Community service also encourages students to develop work ethics, new skills and even teaches them responsibility and communication skills.
Although there are many benefits to community service there are also many drawbacks. Many high school students already have extremely busy schedules and stressful life. High school students are worried about classroom environments, homework, jobs and sports. Community service can often add to the burden of these responsibilities and requirements for high school students. Community service can also make many students feel uncomfortable as they are exposed to new environments and communities that they may not already be comfortable with. Also many high school students feel as if Muni service areas take advantage of their youth and require them to work more than other community service volunteers. This puts a high school student in a bad position and could often turn the students away from community service.
Community service has many benefits and drawbacks is up to the school district to decide whether or not they require the students to take part in many community service.

Many students believe that taking part in a distance learning classes would be worth the time and energy. These classes do not allow you to go to the school to learn but instead allow you to learn in front of your own computer. Although this might sound like an ideal learning environment there many things that you should consider before signing up for your distance-learning class. Here’s a look at some things you should consider for signing up for classes.
Self-discipline. Online and distance learning classes require that you study and take the time for the class. No one will be there to hold your hand and make sure that your assignments are done. If you lack the self-discipline and need someone to remind you about your assignments this may not be the course to take as you will miss out on doing the assignments.
Customized Communication. Distance learning classes require that you communicate with your teacher and students in different ways than you normally would in a classroom environment. You will be required to take part in forums, chats and e-mail back and forth. Many students find this type of communication tiresome and invasive. Consider what type of communication you like to have your teachers before signing up for an online distance learning class.
Internet and Computer Requirements. Distance learning and online courses will have a minimum computer and Internet requirement. While some distance-learning classes will offer you a computer some do not. This means you must be able to have computer that will allow you to sign on and take part in the online courses. If you’re unable to meet the minimum requirements you will not have the same learning experience as other students in the class.

When the student enters their college or university they normally enter the college as an undergraduate. Many people assume the college is just the first four years of your college career. However, college is actually a multilevel experience that encompasses a wide range of classes for undergraduate, graduate and even doctorate classes. Here’s a look at the first tier of a person’s college experience. This will look at the undergraduate level of college.
Being an undergraduate encompasses the first four years of your college career. Usually colleges will separate the undergraduate year into the first two years and the last two years. The first two years will usually encompass a lot of general education classes. These classes usually consist of English, math, writing and science. These are classes that any undergraduate student must complete before they can graduate regardless of their major. During the first two years they’ll be some basic level courses that are significant to the major of the student’s choice.
The second two years of undergraduate college career encompasses classes that are more specific to the major. These classes generally require that you have a prerequisite of the undergraduate classes and courses. Every major has a list of classes that must be completed before student can graduate with the major or minor of their choice. Once the classes have been achieved a student is eligible for graduation.
An undergraduate degree allows students to be able to qualify for a wide range of jobs that they were on eligible for before. This degree allows students to show that they are proficient in basic level of knowledge on the subject of their choice. Many jobs will look upon a college degree is showing that the student has organizational, educational skills and leadership skills which makes it a perfect candidate for hiring.

It doesn’t matter if one is talking about garden hoses, suitcases, or people; when pressure is applied, the results are unpredictable. You never know if the object or person in question will hold up under the pressure, explode, or just give way.
One of the ways that pressure is being applied to our educational system is in the expectancy that most students will pass their classes, continue on with their education, and ultimately graduate from schools. School administrators are rated on these criterions; specifically how well their school does on standardized testing, how many students pass each grade, and how few drop out of school.
One would expect that this pressure would cause administrators to strive harder and push the teachers working under them to do a better job. I’m sure that’s what’s happening in a large number of cases, but I’m just as sure that isn’t what’s happening in many other cases.
Since teachers give the grades, and administers review those grades, it’s just as easy for them to change those grades. In fact, that is exactly what is happening in many cases; teachers and administrators are changing grades, to make themselves look better.
It’s one thing to up a student’s grade who’s right on the borderline between a C and a B so that they get the B; but, it’s a totally different thing to give a student who is failing a passing grade. All that guarantees is that students who don’t know the material and haven’t done the work still get to move up a grade. If the school system does that enough times, they can actually graduate those students; possibly even graduating students who can’t even read.
While I can easily understand rating school administrators based upon some sort of measurable criterion, the system that is being used is obviously not working. Any criterion that is used must be something that doesn’t have the ability to negatively impact students.
There are hundreds of colleges online that offer many potential students the opportunity to learn from home. With so many options available to students it can be easy to be overwhelmed when picking out what type of online college you should attend. Each one has something a little bit unique about it to make it stand out above the other options. Just like with physical colleges, a student will know if their online college is right for them from the beginning.
Here are some things to look into to make sure that your online college is right for you.
Flexibility. Many colleges allow you to be flexible with your schedule. Some require that you be available on certain days for certain classes and to take part in interactive chats, others do not and allow you to view the lectures from home. Look into which your college requires if flexibility and time management are an issue for you.
Physical College Locations. Many physical college and university campuses offer online classes also. However, sometimes they require that you meet on the college campus once a week, month or semester. Check to see how often you are required to be on the college campus and when, as this may be an issue.
Degree Obtained In. Many college campuses have an accelerated course that allows you to get your degree in a certain amount of time. Make sure you inquire about the average amount of time it takes a person to get the degree that you are looking for. If you want to be out of school in a certain amount of time a slower schedule may not help at all.
Withdrawal Credits. If you were to withdraw from the classes do you get some form of a refund, is so what amount. Inquire before you enroll in case something comes up.

As online colleges grow in popularity people are starting to wonder if online colleges are the same thing as actual colleges. Are the benefits the same? Is the experience the same? What makes these places so unique and special when others could go to college classes at a community college?
While the materials are the same, the experience is a bit different. Here is a quick look at what makes online classes unique from actual college campuses.
Online Classes are More Interactive. Many online classes have mailing lists, forums and interactive chats that allow students to interact with the teachers and students in the classes. Many physical college classes encourage interaction, some do not. Students who attend online classes say they feel they are more interactive and fun then those of the physical classes.
Flexibility. Online classes allow a lot more flexibility then physical classes. If there is a lecture it is usually a taped lecture that can be viewed on the student’s own time. This means you are not required to have to be sitting in class staring at the chalkboard, but you can view it at midnight or in the middle of the day. The flexibility option is what draws many students to the online courses.
Teacher Help. Due to the interactiveness of the online classes many teachers that are taking part in online classes are a lot more interactive then those in physical classes. They will email back and forth with students, encourage questions and help out when they can. Sometimes if a student expresses interest they will further research a subject and find more materials online for them. Some physical college teachers may do this but the majority do not. This is what makes online classes so appealing to some who are looking for one on one interaction.
